UPay Guide Find your bill route

Pay your electricity bill without a convenience fee

Your discom has its own portal. It usually charges nothing. That is the whole trick.

Find the right discom

Electricity distribution is run by state and often by region within a state. Your bill names the discom at the top, and the consumer number is usually a nine to twelve digit number near the address. Searching by city can return several operators, so use the name on the bill.

Where the consumer number is

  • Top-right of a printed bill, often labelled Consumer No. or Account No.
  • On the SMS or email reminder sent before the due date.
  • On the meter reading slip left by the reader.
  • On the discom's portal under "view bill" if you have registered.

Avoiding the fee

Pay on the discom's own site or app with UPI. Third-party apps often add a convenience fee, and a wallet may add another. If you use an app for reminders, that is fine — do the actual payment on the provider's page.

When it goes wrong

Save the transaction reference. If the amount is debited but the bill still shows unpaid, do not pay twice. Wait for the provider's stated settlement window, then raise a complaint with the reference and your bank statement. Paying again is how people end up with a credit balance and an argument.

Questions people ask

Can I pay someone else's electricity bill?

Yes, with their consumer number. The bill is tied to the connection, not to whoever pays it.

What if my bill is disputed?

Pay the undisputed portion before the due date to avoid disconnection, then raise the dispute in writing with the discom. Most states have an online grievance route and a consumer forum above it.
